LG SteamWashers TROMM Front-Load SteamWasher with 4.0 Cu. Ft. Capacity, 9 Wash Programs & SteamFresh Technology: I and II
I gleaned most of the following information from an appliance afficianado/salesman Chuck Diehl, and I am repeating it here with his permission.
First of all, the LG Steam Washing Machines I and II, are attractive.
There is a difference between the two washing machines. The SteamWasher I has a 1300RPM spin, an electronic readout showing functions and time remaining in the cycles, an interior drum light that may be turned on during the cycle without opening the door, a handheld monitor to check the program and where it stands anywhere you are at that time at home or away, and a color availability of midnight blue or snowcrest white. The price is $1599 in colors or $1499 in white. The matching dryer is $1199 (electric) $1269 (gas) in colors or 1099 (electric)$1169 (gas) in white. The Steam Washer II does not have the electronic readout and only spins 1200 RPMs. It is available in Cherry Red or Snowcrest White and retails for $1399 in colors or $1299 in white and the matching dryers are $999 (electric) $1059 (gas) in colors or $899 (electric) $959 (gas) in white. The monitor may be used as far away as possible. It is a small computer and sends as well as receives messages from and to the washer/dryer.You could be in Vancouver and want to start a cycle going in the washer (I don't know why anyone would need to do that!)or maybe the dryer. Who knows? It is a great sales point though and really, being a freebie, and retailing for almost $300, LG has it in the bag. The quality on the Steam Washer II is no less than the SteamWasher I; it's only a special model LG created for The Home Depot to keep them set apart from Best Buy, Lowes, Sears and other competitive dealers who may be pushing the SteamWasher IIs.The color availability as well as the price difference is the "method of madness"used to sell the product.
The battles of American brands as well as the continuation of their failures due to their pompous and arrogant behavior stemming from quality control to customer satisfaction has enabled the foreign trade companies to enter our market and basically take over.It really isn't their fault. It's our own ignorance and pride that has created this. Chuick Diehl's honest opinion? He likes it. Anybody who goes to work to build a good, dependable product and takes pride in the way it operates and looks will triumph.
Chuck says:
"George, you CAN NOT even hear these operate!!!! I have them in operation at work and when customers walk by and see they're on, they stop dead in their tracks and can't believe their eyes and ears. That's when I step in and sell them. We are the only Home Depot store that doesn't receive the problem calls from angry customers who buy the LG's.These are the customers who either do not read the instructions or follow through on them afterwords and the ones who aren't educated buy the salespeople who they dealt with on how these operate and how to maintain them. I may spend a little more time with my customers but theyalways seem to be the ones who come back to brag and thank me for "converting" them to a much more conservative, environmentally safe/friendly appliance that is not only a great performer but also fun to watch. It happens almost four times a week.Usually, they arrive when I am with another customer talking about the same product.Their response is nothing but assurance to the current customer(s) that all I have told them so far is rock solid truth. The ball is now in their park."Will that be cash or charge? -- Would you like to put this on your Home Depot account? -- You don't have one? -- That's great! I can run your credit through and get you a temporary one in 5 minutes and if you qualify, I'll take an additional 10% off your purchase of up to $2,000 today and give you 12 months 0% interest! So what day did you say you'd like these delivered?"
The rest is history. That's how it works. The salesman made the customers not only happy by sharing with them his knowledge in a positive manor how to operate this new washer/dryer but also saved them a bundle by opening an account and taking 10% off ($200) and giving them 12 months 0% interest.Chuck says that happens every day.
I Want To Read Your Comments and QuestionsLoading...
I have read a lot of reviews and comments about Bosch and LG. The LG Steam Washer is currently at the top of the list. One concern that I have is that, since there are only two of us, we tend to have small loads yet I really like to be able to wash our pillows and comforters. You made a comment about washing one piece of clothing - that may actually happen occassionally at my house. An article of clothing that needs separate handling. Is this something that will cause problems with the LG? Also, I have seen some complaints about water in the bottom of the machine underneath the tub. This, of course causes, mildrew smells in the clothing. Is this a problem LG has?
What HE brands of detergent do you recommend? We use ALL clear and free. Please email me!!!! dnix2006@yahoo.com
I will be going to the K.B.I.S. (Kitchen and Bath Industrial Show)the first week of may to see the new products (major appliances)out for show. When I return,I'll have some more information on new products coming out next fall.My friend,Atul, the owner and president of Equator Corporation will be there and has asked my prescence to be in his company during the show.I was happy to ablodge.
It is great to read that Chuck is still in the buisness. He was in People Mag years ago and it sounds like he has not changed a bit.
I have had a continuing problem with the moldy scent in my LG Steam Washer. It has gotten so bad, that it smells up the whole room along with the clothing that has been just washed. I clean the little lint trap regularly and have finally resorted to spraying lysol in the rubber seal around the door that has black moldy looking spots on it.
What am I to do?
To fix / prevent moldy smells:
1. Clean the filter - this should be done regularly At the bottom front of the machine, remove the access panel, drain the standing water into a shallow pan, unscrew and pull out the filter and remove the crud. You'll find lint, scraps of paper, plastic, beads, small toys etc.
2. Run the LG "Clean" cycle (Check the manual for directions). It's recommended that you add vinegar or bleach.
3. Do not use detergent with fabric softener
4. Do not use liquid fabric softener - this is a liquid wax, and it will absolutely build up on the inner surfaces and promote mold growth. This happens with top loaders as well.
5. Use less detergent. Take a clean washcloth and squeeze it in a sink of plain water. If you see suds you are using too much detergent. Think about the gallons of water a top loading machine uses (20?) vs the few gallons of water a front loader uses. You need proportionally less detergent - 1/10th as much.
6. Leave the washer door open when not in use
7. Take the clean laundry out when the cycle is over
8. Use bleach occasionally - and certainly if some itkems are already stinky - like a sour kitchen dishcloth for example.
9. Wipe the rubber door seal with a cloth after you've finished while it's still damp to remove lint. If you live where it's humid, dry off the glass door and any other obvious moisture.
10. As mentioned above - don't forget to run the "clean" cycle once a month or so.
Hope this helps.
This is great, I work part-time at another big home improvement store (hoping to make writing the full-time gig) and I completely get it. Washer aside, having people on the floor who know what they're talking about and can relay it to people without overwhelming them is absolutely priceless.
Frigidaire (Electrolux of Sweeden)has introduced a new version of their popular front loading, stackable washer and dryer,Affinity. They have increased the interior size making them larger in capacity and increased the dryer capacity from a small 5.2 cu ft to a whopping 7.2 cu ft and made the drum stainless steel as apposed to a painted interior.By the way,to all who have responded to this,I now reside in Honoka'a, Hawaii. On the "Big Island" and work at a local lp gas supplier where we service and sell mostly gas but also electric major appliances.I moved here in Dec.of 2007 and enjoy going out on the coast with some of the greatest native Hawaiians I met here.
Can I wash bed pillows or sofa pillows (down or polyester)? On what cycle? Is the dryer's "steam fresh" cycle a better choice for freshening these things, albeit leaving them dirty?
I have an LG Steam Washer and the problem I am having is that the door hinges are all corroded and caked with what looks like detergent, resulting in the door not operating properly, and skewing the hinges so that it doe snot close correctly. I use very little detergent and only HE, but it seems it may have been leaking down the inside of the front for some time. It also has rusted the left corner just under the soap drawer and caused the door not to seat correctly and therefore leak at the bottom center of the gasket. Any ideas?

What are some examples of the kind of angry calls the other Home Depots receive? What are some quirks of the LG that a potential buyer might be interested in?
